This scene illustrates a French chronicle from the downfall of Troy to the death of Charles V in 1380, entitled Le Mirouer Historial Abregie de France. It is a large book, written on 222 leaves of heavy vellum, and depicts the Battle of Hastings after which, as the text beneath it states, Duke William was crowned on Christmas Day by Aldred, Archbishop of York.

This sumptuous manuscript with its brightly coloured, if stylized , illustrations is clothed in an eighteenth-century binding of crimson velvet with elaborate gilt metalwork ornamenting both upper and lower cover. MS. Bodl. 968, fol. 173r
