Mounted print of Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron, 1349 and 1351.

The artist who embellished this splendid copy of the Decameron in 1467 was Taddeo Crivelli. The Este accounts record that he was employed to illuminate the Decameron for Teofilo Calcagnini, a member of the duke's court.

It recounts how during the Black Death in 1348 seven women and three men met in the church of Santa Maria Novella in Florence, and over the following 10 days each told a story on a given theme. The entire collection is sometimes referred to as Cento novella. MS. Holkham misc. 49, fol. 5r
