The Bodleian Libraries' copy of the Shakespeare First Folio, was received free from the Stationers' Company in 1623 in unbound sheets, and was then sent to a local binder, William Wildgoose.
However, this copy does not appear in later Bodleian catalogues and it is assumed that it was disposed of when the Third Folio was received in 1664. By happy coincidence, much scholarly sleuthing and dogged determination to raise the funds (£3,000 - the most expensive purchase that the Library had made at the time), the Bodleian was able to buy back this very special copy of his plays in 1906.
