In collaboration with Annie Sloan, this original artwork has been created exclusively for Oxfordshire ArtWeeks, inspired by the Bodleian's medieval bestiary collection.

This mid-century modern chest from the 1960s has undergone a complete transformation using Annie Sloan's revolutionary furniture paint, Chalk Paint™.

The front features a big heraldic lion with a highly decorative and patterned border.

At one end is an elephant and castle. The original had clearly been drawn by someone who had never seen an elephant. The elephant has curly ears and ankle joints like a dog. He has a chain in his trunk and is being guided by a monkey. Atop the elephant are three wonderful soldiers in chain mail clasping their swords and spears.

On the other end is an elephant and soldiers. This elephant has odd flapping ears and has a big wooden seat called a howdah strapped to his back. These were used to carry wealthy nobles to war or to go on a hunt. This elephant has five soldiers on his back.

  • 33cm deep, 84cm wide, 48.5cm high (inc. legs)
  • Mid-Century modern chest, circa 1960s
