The handwritten pages of 15th-century prayer-books are often illuminated with borders depicting flowers, fruits, birds and animals. Sometimes such marginal images may be interpreted as symbols, to enhance the mood of the larger religious miniatures and prayers which they surround. More often, the readers who prayed regularly through the set Hours of the day may have looked at the flowery borders and their inhabitants simply for distraction and delight.
